Kenichi Soga is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, and an International Fellow of the Engineering Academy of Japan. He received his BEng and MEng from Kyoto University in 1987 and 1989, respectively, and his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 1994, under the supervision of Professor James K. Mitchell. He joined the University of Cambridge in 1994 and became Professor of Civil Engineering in 2007, before moving to UC Berkeley in 2016. He is currently the Donald H. McLaughlin Chair in Mineral Engineering and a Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley, where he also directs the Berkeley Center for Smart Infrastructure and serves as a faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has published more than 500 journal and conference papers and is the co-author of “Fundamentals of Soil Behavior” with Professor James K. Mitchell, the 4th edition of which was published in 2026. He has also co-authored “Distributed Fibre Optic Strain Sensing for Monitoring Civil Infrastructure,” “Wireless Sensor Networks for Civil Infrastructure Monitoring,” and “The Material Point Method for Geotechnical Engineering.” His current research activities are infrastructure sensing and modeling, performance-based design and maintenance of underground structures, energy geotechnics, and geomechanics from micro to macro. He is the recipient of several awards, including the George Stephenson Medal (2006) and the Telford Gold Medal (2010) from the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize (2007) and the Ralph B. Peck Award (2026) from the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Bakar Prize (2022) of UC Berkeley for his work on commercializing smart infrastructure technologies. He delivered the inaugural Skempton Lecture at the 16th European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in 2015 and the 63rd Rankine Lecture in 2025. He served as the Chair of Technical Committee TC105 “Geomechanics from Micro to Macro” of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (2019–2024) and as the founding Editor-in-Chief of the ICE Smart Infrastructure and Construction journal.
