Filippo Catani is a Full Professor of Engineering Geology at the Department of Geosciences, University of Padova, Italy, and an internationally recognized expert in the application of artificial intelligence to geohazard research. He currently directs the Machine Intelligence and Slope Stability (MISS) Laboratory and serves as President of the BSc Programme in Earth and Climate Dynamics at the University of Padova. He is also a UNESCO Chair Associate on the Prevention and Sustainable Management of Geo-Hydrological Hazards at the University of Florence, and has been an Invited Professor of Landslide Monitoring and Early Warning at KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) since 2011. He served as Assistant to the President of the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) from 2011 to 2014, and has been a core member of the Joint Technical Committee JTC2 of ISSMGE, IAEG and ISRM, as well as a member of the NASA–JPL informal group on Earth surface changes. He is editor of the EGU journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences and the Springer journal Geoenvironmental Disasters, and has served as guest editor for Landslides and Remote Sensing. Having conducted visiting research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley, he is regarded as a pioneer in applying deep learning and machine learning to landslide detection, susceptibility mapping, and failure forecasting. His publications, more than 200 international journal papers, have appeared in Geophysical Research Letters, Water Resources Research, Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, and Landslides, with over 13,000 citations. He is ranked among the world’s top 1% most influential scientists (Stanford–Elsevier list) and among the leading Earth scientists in Italy.
